Silence is Overstimulating
Silence is difficult, especially at a time when it's hard to find anymore. Still, when found, we often flee from it like we would anything else we could construe to be a righteous act in fleeing, but rather, the reverse is true. Staying and facing the nothingness is a greater act of valor (if one wants to focus on those things). By nothingness, I mean the silence. Silence is difficult because silence overwhelms our senses more than the constant bombardment of information and noise. Silence is when we become more aware of ourselves and those around us. It is when we begin to wrestle with life's difficult questions rather than having others give us commentary on a worldview they believe we should have. Silence is when I became aware that my actions have consequences, that life is not as simple as some would suggest, and that there is always another side to the story. Silence is when I no longer take in more information but when I begin to process that information. This is why silence can be more stimulating than chaos; if the noise never stops, then those other awarenesses never arise, and I'm swept away by the next current of culture, constantly drifting, never grounded.
